This can enhance gas exchange efficiency from as low as 5 %, in conventional oxygenation processes, to 85 % or more. This leads to an increase in dissolved oxygen within wastewater, and can sustain intense growth of microbes in wastewater. Further, the growing colonies of Diatom algae and microbes synergize to degrade complex organics, remove excess nutrients and ammonia, even degrade heavy metals, mitigate E coli and harmful pathogens, reduce salinity and reduce sodicity to turn wastewater into high grade agricultural water, even better than most ground water extracted for irrigation. Phycoremediation stands out as an environmentally sustainable and eco-friendly wastewater treatment method for lentic & lotic bodies reducing the reliance on chemical additives and energy-intensive processes while contributing to cleaner water and a more sustainable approach to turning wastewater into high grade irrigation water quality.
